When I was asked to write about procurement to attract graduates into the profession, I came up with the concept of the 5 hats of success:
Hat 1: Entrepreneur
Able to spot opportunities and manage risk to support the organisation’s growth plans.
Hat 2: Change manager
Able to define future state requirements and develop realistic plans on how to achieve it.
Hat 3: Negotiator
Skilled in planning, executing and implementing negotiated benefits with colleagues elsewhere in the business and suppliers.
Hat 4: Politician
Able to select the right issues to run with, manage expectations and navigate obstacles.
Hat 5: Technician
Expert in procurement processes such as sourcing management, category management and supplier relationship management.
What do you think? Are there any other hats procurement professionals must wear?
